According to our O.P.P. sources, North and South Dundas Counties have the HIGHEST amount of reported deer collisions in Ontario. Most reported wildlife collisions happen on RURAL roads. These collisions generally happen between 5:00-8:00 am and 6:00pm to midnight. OCTOBER and NOVEMBER tend to have the highest number of collisions because fall is mating season and deer are migrating into their yarding areas.
What can you do to stay SAFE?
- Stay alert, especially in early morning, at dusk, and at night
- At night, use your high beams as much as possible to increase visible distance.
- If you see a deer on the roadside, slow down and switch to low beams to reduce the chance of disorienting the deer. Flashing your headlights and honking your horn will actually cause the deer to run out in front of your car, or freeze in it's tracks!
- NEVER ATTEMPT EXTREME MANEUVERS! It is safer to hit the deer than to risk a collision with another vehicle or an obstacle.Crossing Signs! They aren't kidding!
- Install Deer Whistles to your vehicle. These devices emit a high frequency sound wave that scares animals away from the oncoming vehicle.
- Deer very often travel in herds. If a deer crosses in front of you, SLOW DOWN. Other deer may follow!!!
